Jio IPO F&O Impact : How India’s Biggest-Ever Listing Could Affect Reliance Industries, Airtel and Nifty

PParth Vadhel
•2026-10-15•8 min read

Jio Platforms' Rs. 30,213 crore IPO opens October 21. Here is how it could affect Reliance Industries, Airtel, the Nifty and the F&O calendar.

Jio IPO F&O Impact : How India’s Biggest-Ever Listing Could Affect Reliance Industries, Airtel and Nifty

Jio Platforms has finally put numbers on its IPO. The issue opens on October 21, a day after Dussehra, and closes on October 23, with a price band of Rs. 1,065 to Rs. 1,119 per share. At the upper end, it raises Rs. 30,213 crore, which would overtake Hyundai Motor India's Rs. 27,870 crore issue as the biggest IPO India has seen.

Most of the coverage is about whether you should apply. For anyone who trades derivatives, a different set of questions matters more. What happens to Reliance Industries, which owns two thirds of Jio? What does it do to Airtel? And where does all this sit against the Nifty and the October F&O calendar? Let us take them in order.

The Deal in Numbers

The IPO is a fresh issue of up to 27 crore shares, so every rupee raised goes to the company. Earlier estimates, including the one in our Jio Platforms IPO explainer, pointed to roughly Rs. 37,700 crore. The price band has settled that at Rs. 28,755 crore at the floor and Rs. 30,213 crore at the cap, which is closer to US$ 3.1 billion than the 3.8 billion dollars quoted earlier. At the upper band, the implied equity value is about Rs. 10.3 lakh crore, and the price works out to roughly 32 to 33 times Jio's FY26 earnings per share of Rs. 33.63.

A portion is reserved for eligible employees and Reliance shareholders, with up to Rs. 3,000 crore set aside in total. Reliance held 66.43 percent of Jio before the issue. Because 27 crore new shares are being added, that falls to about 64.5 percent after the IPO by our calculation. Anchor bidding is scheduled for October 19, allotment is tentatively October 26, and listing is tentatively October 28.

What It Means for Reliance Industries

The main debate on RIL is the holding company discount. Reliance already owns about two thirds of Jio, so the value is already sitting inside its market cap of roughly Rs. 15.9 lakh crore. Once Jio trades on its own, the market can put a price on that stake directly, and listed subsidiaries often trade at a discount inside the parent. Brokerages put RIL's implied discount on its Jio stake at around 36 percent, and they value Jio at roughly Rs. 331 to Rs. 450 per RIL share.

Nomura argues that RIL's shares have already corrected sharply ahead of the listing, which more than makes up for a slightly lower valuation than expected plus a holding company discount, a combined effect of about Rs. 136 per share. Motilal Oswal sees the listing as a trigger for Airtel and says it leaves room for value unlocking in RIL. The table below shows the simple arithmetic of how Jio's listing price flows into RIL's stake.

If Jio Lists At Jio Equity Value RIL Stake Value Stake as % of RIL Market Cap
Rs. 1,007 (10% lower) Rs. 9.27 lakh crore Rs. 5.98 lakh crore 37.6%
Rs. 1,119 (upper band) Rs. 10.30 lakh crore Rs. 6.64 lakh crore 41.8%
Rs. 1,231 (10% higher) Rs. 11.33 lakh crore Rs. 7.31 lakh crore 46.0%
Rs. 1,343 (20% higher) Rs. 12.36 lakh crore Rs. 7.97 lakh crore 50.1%

This is illustrative arithmetic, not a forecast. It assumes RIL's roughly 64.5 percent post-issue stake and a Rs. 15.9 lakh crore RIL market cap, and it ignores any holding company discount. Apply a 20 percent discount to the middle row and the stake falls to about 33 percent of RIL's value, which sits right on Nomura's estimate of 33 to 35 percent. It also shows why the first few days of Jio trading matter for RIL, since every 10 percent move in Jio's price shifts the stake value by about 4 percent of RIL's market cap, before any discount.

There is one more piece on the balance sheet side. Up to Rs. 27,500 crore of the proceeds is earmarked to repay borrowings at Reliance Jio Infocomm, which lowers debt inside the group.

What It Means for Airtel

At the upper band, Jio would be valued at about Rs. 10.3 lakh crore, slightly below Airtel's market capitalisation of roughly Rs. 10.87 lakh crore. The earnings picture is more striking. Jio's price works out to about 33 times FY26 earnings, while one analyst quoted in a report puts Airtel near 63 times trailing earnings. The two figures use different earnings bases, so treat the gap as a rough guide rather than a precise comparison.

Jio on FY26 earnings at the upper band, Airtel on trailing earnings per a reported analyst estimate

Nomura calls Airtel's valuation discount to Jio unjustified and expects the gap to narrow, at a minimum, once Jio goes public. Motilal Oswal ascribes a broadly similar 12 times FY28 EV/EBITDA to both Jio and Airtel's India business. Airtel chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal has also publicly backed the offering. The caveat comes from SMC Global's analyst, who warned that some investors may rebalance their portfolios ahead of the IPO, which could create short-term volatility in Airtel's shares.

The Nifty Angle: Jio Will Not Be in the Index on Day One

RIL and Airtel both carry large weights in the Nifty, a point worth keeping in mind alongside our breakdown of Nifty 50 sector weightage. Jio Platforms itself will not enter the index immediately. Only stocks available in the NSE futures and options segment are eligible for the Nifty 50, and a new listing has to qualify for F&O first. Our explainer on Nifty 50 inclusion and exclusion covers how that works.

The closest precedent is the same group's financial arm. Jio Financial Services listed in August 2023, entered the F&O segment from November 29, 2024, and joined the Nifty 50 effective March 28, 2025. I could not find any announcement of a fast-track route for Jio Platforms, so the passive buying that comes with index inclusion is likely months away, not days. The demand in the first few weeks will come from institutions, wealthy investors and retail, not index funds.

The F&O Calendar Around the Listing

The dates stack up in a way derivative traders should notice. The weekly Nifty expiry moves to Monday, October 19 because of Dussehra, the same day as anchor bidding. The issue runs from October 21 to 23, allotment is tentatively October 26, the monthly expiry falls on Tuesday, October 27, and the tentative listing date is October 28. That means the monthly expiry lands one day before the listing, so positions in RIL and Airtel are being rolled or squared off before the market has seen where Jio actually trades.

Two practical points follow. First, event-driven spikes in implied volatility tend to fade quickly once the event passes, which is why our guide to IV crush in options is useful reading before buying options into a binary event. Second, expiry week behaves differently from other weeks, something we covered in our piece on weekly Nifty expiry and option chain trading. A Rs. 30,213 crore issue also absorbs a lot of liquidity during subscription, so it is worth watching whether other large caps feel any pressure while bids are being funded.

How Mega Issues Tend to Behave

We saw a recent version of this with the NSE issue, where institutional demand arrived on the final day despite a collapsing grey market premium, as we explained in our piece on why QIBs rushed in on the last day. Expect similar patterns here, with early subscription numbers telling you little. GMP chatter will also pick up, and it is worth rereading whether you can trust grey market premiums before letting it drive a decision.

Foreign demand is the other thing to watch. With outflows heavy, as we covered in our piece on FPIs selling Rs. 45,000 crore in October, a strong foreign response to Jio would be a useful signal on whether global money is willing to come back, at least through the primary market.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. When does the Jio Platforms IPO open and what is the price band?

The IPO opens on October 21 and closes on October 23, 2026, with a price band of Rs. 1,065 to Rs. 1,119 per share.

2. How big is the Jio Platforms IPO?

It is a fresh issue of up to 27 crore shares, raising Rs. 28,755 crore at the floor price and Rs. 30,213 crore at the cap, which would make it India's largest IPO.

3. How much will Reliance Industries own after the IPO?

Reliance held 66.43% before the issue, and after 27 crore new shares are added its stake falls to about 64.5% by our calculation.

4. Will Jio Platforms be in the Nifty 50 or F&O on listing day?

No. Only F&O-eligible stocks can join the Nifty 50, and a new listing must qualify for F&O first. Jio Financial Services took over a year to reach F&O after listing.

5. How could the Jio listing affect Airtel's share price?

Nomura and Motilal Oswal expect Airtel's valuation gap to Jio to narrow after listing, though some investors may rebalance ahead of the IPO, which could cause short-term volatility.
