Nifty touched 24,800 even as global AI stocks sold off hard. See what NSE option chain data, PCR, max pain and OI levels are signalling for the days ahead.
Here is something that does not happen often. Global technology stocks were selling off hard on 6 November, dragged down by fresh concerns that a Democrat-led push for tighter AI regulation, following their strong showing in the US midterms, could squeeze the sector's growth story. On a normal day, that kind of global risk-off move would have pulled Nifty down with it. Instead, the index closed near 24,801, up about 1.08% on the day, and briefly touched 24,824 intraday.
That is not a coincidence. India largely sat out the AI rally this year because our index has limited exposure to the stocks driving that trade. So when the AI unwind started hitting global markets, Nifty found itself in the unusual position of being a relative safe haven rather than a casualty. Up roughly 6.4% over four sessions, the index is on track for one of its best weeks in years. But a strong rally also raises a fair question, is this sustainable, or is the market getting ahead of itself? The options data gives a clearer answer than the price chart alone.
Pulling the live NSE data for the Monday, 9 November expiry, which has shifted from the usual Thursday because of the Diwali holiday schedule, a few numbers stand out. The Put-Call Ratio by open interest sits around 1.50 to 1.52, meaningfully above 1, which typically signals more put writing than call writing, a sign that traders are comfortable selling downside insurance rather than rushing to buy it. India VIX is sitting near 15.58, on the lower side, suggesting the options market is not pricing in panic despite the global headlines.
Max pain for the week comes in around 24,650, just below Monday's actual close, which is a fairly normal pattern heading into an expiry that still has a few sessions left to run. The ATM straddle is pricing in a move of roughly plus or minus 1.3%, putting the expected range somewhere between 24,362 and 24,992 by expiry. For a market that just rallied 6.4% in four sessions, that is not an aggressively wide range, which tells you option writers are not bracing for continued fireworks in either direction just yet.
This is where it gets useful for anyone trading the index this week. The heaviest call open interest is sitting at the 25,000 strike, which effectively marks the nearest resistance zone the options market is watching. On the put side, the heaviest OI is concentrated around 24,500, which is acting as the immediate support cushion below current levels.
If you have read our explainer on reading support and resistance using option chain OI, you will know that these levels are not hard ceilings or floors, they are zones where large positions are concentrated and where price often sees friction. A break above 25,000 with fresh call writing unwinding would be a genuinely bullish signal, while 24,500 holding as support through any pullback would confirm the market still has conviction behind this move.
| Metric | Reading | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Nifty spot (6 Nov close) | Around 24,801, up 1.08% | Rising despite global weakness |
| PCR (OI) | 1.50 to 1.52 | More put writing, mildly bullish bias |
| India VIX | Around 15.58 | Low, no panic priced in |
| Max pain | Near 24,650 | Slightly below spot, typical mid-week pattern |
| Key OI levels | Resistance 25,000, support 24,500 | Defines the near-term trading range |
What stands out from the intraday data is how the PCR climbed alongside the price through the day, moving from around 1.30 in the early morning to above 1.70 by early afternoon, before settling back slightly into the close. That pattern, PCR rising with price, usually reflects fresh put writing as the rally gathered conviction, traders getting more comfortable selling puts as the index pushed higher rather than chasing calls at elevated premiums.
We have written before about this exact dynamic. Our piece on why Indian IT falls even when global AI rallies, the contradiction explained laid out the flip side of this coin, Indian markets have historically underperformed when AI stocks rallied hard, precisely because our index has so little direct exposure to that trade. The mirror image is now playing out, when AI names sell off globally on regulation fears, India has comparatively little to lose, and some capital that is rotating out of expensive AI-linked stocks appears to be finding its way into markets like ours instead.
This lines up with the broader FPI flow story too. We recently covered how foreign investors poured in Rs 21,715 crore over 10 days after months of selling, and a global rotation away from richly valued AI stocks toward relatively cheaper emerging markets would only add to that momentum if it continues.
With the Diwali-shifted expiry landing on Monday, 9 November, instead of the usual Thursday, and the Muhurat trading session following soon after, this is a genuinely unusual week for the derivatives calendar. If you are not clear on how the holiday schedule is affecting expiry and session timing, our guide on Diwali week 2026 for traders, including the Muhurat session and expiry shift covers the full calendar.
For positioning through the rest of the week, the 24,500 to 25,000 band defined by the heavy OI walls is the range to watch. A straddle or strangle strategy makes sense if you expect this range to hold through expiry given the relatively contained IV, something we explained in our straddle versus strangle comparison. If you believe the rally has further legs given the global AI unwind, a bull call spread lets you participate without paying full premium at elevated levels, covered in our bull call spread guide using the option chain.
Keep an eye on the US midterm aftermath too, since the regulatory uncertainty around AI stocks is still developing and could swing sentiment either way through the week. We tracked the broader market implications in our note on how the US midterm elections are affecting Nifty, crude and the rupee.
India has limited exposure to AI-linked stocks, so when global AI names fell on regulation concerns after the US midterms, Nifty was largely insulated and even saw some rotational buying interest.
A PCR above 1 generally indicates more put open interest than call open interest, which traders often read as a mildly bullish to neutral signal since it suggests comfort selling downside protection.
Based on open interest concentration, 24,500 is acting as the nearest support level while 25,000 is the nearest resistance, based on the heaviest put and call OI respectively.
The weekly expiry has shifted to Monday, 9 November 2026, because of the Diwali holiday schedule, which also affects the Muhurat trading session timing.
