Jio Platforms is now India’s second most valuable company at Rs 12.5 lakh crore. See how the market cap table changed and why Nifty inclusion isn’t immediate.
Something unusual happened on Dalal Street on 28 October. Jio Platforms listed, and within hours of its debut it had leapfrogged Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank to become India's second most valuable listed company, trailing only its own parent, Reliance Industries. Shares opened at Rs 1,358, a 21% premium to the Rs 1,119 issue price, and closed the day even higher at Rs 1,419, taking Jio's market capitalisation past Rs 13 lakh crore.
That is a genuinely rare event. India's market cap table at the very top has been fairly stable for years, with the same handful of names rotating through the top five. Jio's arrival changes that table overnight. But here is the part most headlines are skipping past, a company can be the second largest by total market cap and still barely register on the Nifty 50 for months. That contradiction is exactly what this piece is about.
Before the listing, the order at the top looked fairly familiar, Reliance Industries, followed by HDFC Bank, Bharti Airtel and ICICI Bank jostling for the next few spots. Jio's debut rewrote that instantly. Reliance Industries held on to the top spot with a market cap of roughly Rs 15.92 lakh crore, but Jio Platforms slotted in right behind it at around Rs 12.51 lakh crore, pushing Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank each down a notch.
Put together, Reliance Industries and Jio Platforms now carry a combined market value of about Rs 28.40 lakh crore between them, more than the entire listed market cap of several large conglomerates combined. We covered the build-up to this listing in detail in our pieces on the Jio IPO's F&O impact on Reliance, Airtel and the Nifty and Jio at Rs 1,400 plus, the day 2 reality check, both worth a read if you want the fuller listing-week story.
| Rank | Before Jio listing | After Jio listing (28 Oct) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Reliance Industries | Reliance Industries |
| 2 | HDFC Bank | Jio Platforms (new) |
| 3 | Bharti Airtel | Bharti Airtel |
| 4 | ICICI Bank | HDFC Bank |
| 5 | TCS | ICICI Bank |
Here is where most of the excitement around Jio's ranking misses an important technical point. The Nifty 50, like most Indian indices, is not weighted by a company's total market capitalisation. It is weighted by free-float market capitalisation, meaning only the portion of shares actually available for public trading, excluding promoter holdings.
Jio Platforms listed with an unusually small public float, reportedly around 2.5% to 2.93% of outstanding shares. That was made possible by a regulatory change SEBI introduced specifically to accommodate mega-cap IPOs like Jio's and NSE's, allowing a far lower minimum public float than the standard rules would otherwise require, along with an extended multi-year runway to eventually reach the usual 25% public shareholding threshold.
What this means in practice, Jio's Rs 12.5 lakh crore headline market cap looks enormous, but its free-float market cap, the number that actually matters for index weighting, is a small fraction of that. At roughly 3% float, Jio's free-float value works out to a few hundred thousand crore rupees rather than the headline Rs 12-13 lakh crore figure everyone is quoting.
NSE does have a mechanism called Fast Entry that allows very large new listings to be added to an index outside the usual semi-annual rebalancing window, if the stock's full market capitalisation ranks high enough among existing constituents. On a pure total market cap basis, Jio would easily qualify for something like this.
But because Nifty indices are free-float weighted, analysts tracking index mechanics have flagged that Jio's small float will likely cause it to miss Fast Entry eligibility altogether. Index inclusion in the headline indices is expected to wait until at least mid-2027, possibly tied to when pre-IPO lock-ups expire and more shares genuinely become available for public trading. Until then, Jio may enter certain local or sectoral indices sooner, but a Nifty 50 entry on the usual free-float basis looks unlikely in the near term.
This is not the first time India has seen a company with a complicated path into the Nifty 50. Jio Financial Services, a separate Reliance-group entity, had its own curious entry into the index back in 2025, where its inclusion depended on crossing F&O eligibility and free-float thresholds rather than simply being a large, well-known name. If you want the mechanics of how these semi-annual reviews typically work, our explainer on Nifty 50 inclusion and exclusion criteria and the free-float market cap methodology cover this in detail.
If you hold a Nifty 50 index fund or ETF, Jio's absence from the index for now means no immediate rebalancing or forced buying from passive funds. That is actually a notable contrast to past large listings. When Zomato and Jio Financial Services entered the Nifty 50 in March 2025, passive index funds had to buy in to match their new weights, creating a wave of forced inflows estimated at close to a billion dollars. Jio's situation is different precisely because of the float structure.
For active investors, this creates an interesting dynamic. Jio is now a top-two company by total value, widely covered and widely held by investors who bought into the IPO, yet it sits outside the index that most fund managers benchmark against. That means its price moves will not mechanically pull index-tracking money along with it the way a Nifty constituent's moves would. If you are deciding whether to hold your IPO allotment or trade around the listing, our pieces on the Jio IPO listing day strategy and five reasons to hold Jio shares beyond listing day go into this specifically.
There is also a sector-weight angle worth noting. Reliance Industries already carries a heavy weight in the Nifty 50 due to its conglomerate structure spanning energy, retail and telecom. Jio sitting outside the index for now means the Nifty's effective exposure to India's telecom and digital services growth story remains muted at the index level, even though two of the three largest listed Indian companies are now tied to that theme.
The float situation is not necessarily permanent on the current timeline. If Reliance chooses to sell down additional stake in Jio, or if the pre-IPO lock-up for early investors like Meta, Google, and various sovereign wealth funds expires and some of that supply enters the market, the free float could expand meaningfully. A higher float would both improve trading liquidity in the stock and bring Jio closer to crossing the thresholds needed for Nifty inclusion.
Until that happens, investors should treat Jio's "second most valuable company" tag as accurate in headline terms but not yet meaningful in index terms. The distinction matters if you are making decisions based on assumed index fund buying, sector weight shifts, or benchmarking Jio's performance against how a Nifty constituent of similar size would typically trade. For a broader sense of how index weights evolve over a full rebalancing cycle, our piece on the impact of Nifty rebalancing on stocks is a useful companion read.
No. Despite becoming India's second most valuable listed company by total market cap, Jio's very low public float means it is expected to miss Fast Entry and likely won't join the Nifty 50 until at least mid-2027.
Nifty indices are weighted by free-float market capitalisation, not total market cap. With only about 2.5-3% of Jio's shares publicly available, its free-float value is far smaller than its headline market cap suggests.
Jio Platforms closed its listing day with a market capitalisation of roughly Rs 13 lakh crore, making it India's second most valuable listed company after Reliance Industries.
Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank each moved down one position in the market cap rankings as Jio Platforms entered directly at number two.
Not immediately. Since Jio is not yet part of the Nifty 50, passive index funds tracking it are not required to buy the stock, unlike past inclusions such as Zomato and Jio Financial Services.
