The $15 Billion Quick-Commerce Crash : Can Blinkit and Instamart Survive Amazon ?

RRonak Bhalala
•2026-10-29•9 min read

Eternal and Swiggy lost over $15 billion as Amazon Now expanded. Here is how Blinkit and Instamart stack up on losses, stores and survival odds after Q2 FY27.

The $15 Billion Quick-Commerce Crash : Can Blinkit and Instamart Survive Amazon ?

The last few months have been rough for anyone holding India's two listed quick-commerce stocks. After Amazon announced that Amazon Now would stretch from a handful of cities to more than 300, Eternal and Swiggy together lost over $15 billion in market value, a number that found its way into almost every broking note. Then the September quarter results arrived last week, and the story became more interesting, and far more uncomfortable for one of the two. Blinkit made a profit. Instamart lost Rs. 895 crore. Same business, same quarter, wildly different outcomes. That gap is the real story, and it matters more than any Amazon press release.

Where the $15 Billion Went

The figure came from the sell-off that followed Amazon's June announcement that Amazon Now would grow from around 15 cities and towns to over 300. Around that time, Eternal was reported to be down about 28 percent from its October peak and Swiggy about 47 percent from its September high, which together erased more than $15 billion. Macquarie cut its targets on both, downgraded Swiggy to Underperform and warned that the competition could last years rather than quarters.

Amazon did not even need to win for the damage to happen. A deep-pocketed rival forces everyone to keep discounting, and discounting is exactly what stops a dark store from making money. Jefferies had already pointed out last year that Amazon Now was leading the discount race, ahead of DMart Ready, Swiggy's Maxxsaver and Flipkart Minutes.

Since then, the gap between the two stocks has only widened. Swiggy fell 17 percent in a single session on October 23 to hit a 52-week low of Rs. 174.95, which took its market capitalisation to roughly Rs. 50,541 crore and its fall this year to nearly 60 percent. Eternal, meanwhile, held its ground against a weak market after its own results a day earlier.

Blinkit's Quarter: Profit With Growth

Start with the winner. Eternal reported a consolidated net profit of Rs. 125 crore for the September quarter on revenue of Rs. 24,138 crore, up about 78 percent from a year ago. Inside that, Blinkit grew its net order value 79.3 percent to Rs. 20,940 crore and posted an adjusted EBITDA profit of Rs. 184 crore, against a loss of Rs. 156 crore in the same quarter last year. That is the third straight quarter of positive adjusted EBITDA, and the margin has improved for six quarters in a row, now sitting at 0.9 percent of net order value.

What stands out is that this profit did not come from slowing down. Blinkit added 308 net new stores in the quarter, taking its network to 2,751, and raised its March 2027 target to 3,500 stores. Management also signalled it could land at the top end of its 6 percent steady-state margin band while restarting faster store additions from the next quarter. Emkay's read is that quick-commerce competition has started to look predictable, which is a fair way to put it. Predictable competition is something a market leader can plan around.

Instamart's Problem Is Not Amazon, It Is the Maths

Now the other side. Swiggy's consolidated net loss was Rs. 922 crore on revenue of Rs. 7,571 crore, up 36 percent. The food delivery business did its job, posting a record adjusted EBITDA of Rs. 341 crore. But Instamart's adjusted EBITDA loss widened to Rs. 895 crore, from Rs. 778 crore in the June quarter and Rs. 849 crore a year ago. It added 69 dark stores in a single quarter, as many as in the previous three quarters put together, and now runs roughly 1,240 stores with a net order value of Rs. 6,594 crore, which is less than a third of Blinkit's.

Swiggy's management says it believes the losses peaked this quarter. The market was not convinced, and you can see why. A loss margin that barely moves, from about 9.8 percent of gross order value to 9.7 percent, while the absolute loss keeps growing, is not the picture of a business catching up. Nomura still has a Buy on the stock with a target of Rs. 300, but it assigns no value at all to quick commerce in that number. When a brokerage values the food delivery arm and gives the entire Instamart bet zero, it tells you where the doubt sits.

What Amazon Actually Brings to the Fight

Amazon's pitch is simple. It already has the customers, the delivery network and the balance sheet. Its India head, Samir Kumar, has said Prime members shop about three times as often once they start using Amazon Now. The push into 300-plus cities also takes quick commerce into smaller towns, the same belt behind the demand story we covered in our piece on the festive boom in Tier 2 and Tier 3 India.

Scale is where Amazon is still far behind. One industry estimate from June put Amazon Now at around 4.5 to 5 lakh orders a day, against roughly 30 lakh for Blinkit. CLSA's September tracking shows Blinkit with more than 34 percent of all dark stores nationally, while Flipkart Minutes has already overtaken Instamart in the top 10 cities, with 627 dark stores against 615. That last data point should worry Swiggy shareholders more than Amazon does.

Profit on One Side, Burn on the Other

The chart below shows how far apart the two quick-commerce arms have moved in just one year. Blinkit swung from a loss to a profit. Instamart's loss got bigger.

Quick-Commerce Adjusted EBITDA (Rs. crore) 400 200 0 -200 -400 -600 -800 -1000 -156 +184 -849 -895 Blinkit (Eternal) Instamart (Swiggy) Q2 FY26 Q2 FY27

Can They Actually Survive Amazon?

Blinkit almost certainly can. It is profitable at the adjusted EBITDA level, backed by Eternal's own cash generation, and still adding stores. Amazon can pressure its margins, but it cannot easily take away a network of 2,751 stores and a habit that millions of urban Indians already have. Estimates put its market share anywhere between 44 and 50 percent, depending on whose data you trust.

Instamart is a different question. The worry is not survival in the next quarter, but whether Swiggy can keep funding a business losing close to Rs. 900 crore every three months while sitting in a tight race with Zepto for the second spot. Zepto was valued at $7 billion in an October 2025 round, and its expected IPO, which we tracked in our list of upcoming IPOs for 2026-27, will give investors a clean side-by-side on losses and valuation. If Zepto lists well, Instamart's weaker numbers will look even worse by comparison.

Then there is the price of food. With inflation running hot, as we covered in our look at India's CPI and the doubling of onion prices, shoppers will chase discounts harder, and that suits whoever can afford to lose money for longest. Right now that is Amazon, not Swiggy. Even traditional players are in the race, and for a wider view of how listed consumer companies fared this quarter, our consumer sector Q2 roundup covers Trent, DMart and Godrej Consumer.

What Retail Investors Should Watch From Here

If you hold either stock or are tempted to buy the dip, four things are worth tracking over the next two quarters. First, whether Instamart's absolute loss starts falling in rupee terms, not just as a percentage. Second, whether Blinkit keeps adding stores without its margin slipping below the 0.9 percent it earned this quarter. Third, whether Amazon Now starts disclosing anything concrete on orders or stores, because right now most of the numbers floating around are estimates. Fourth, how the Zepto IPO is priced.

Position size matters more than the call itself in a theme this volatile. Our explainer on the 3-5-7 rule of money management is a sensible way to cap what a single bad trade can cost you. Institutional flows are also driving a lot of the day-to-day swings, and the tug of war between foreign selling and domestic buying that we broke down in FPIs sold Rs. 52,000 crore while Nifty rose is worth keeping an eye on.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What caused the $15 billion fall in Eternal and Swiggy?

Amazon's plan to expand Amazon Now to over 300 cities, along with Flipkart's push, raised fears of a longer discount war, which hurt margin expectations for both companies and wiped out more than $15 billion in combined market value.

2. Which is doing better, Blinkit or Instamart?

Blinkit. In Q2 FY27 it made an adjusted EBITDA profit of Rs. 184 crore, while Instamart posted an adjusted EBITDA loss of Rs. 895 crore.

3. How big is Amazon Now compared with Blinkit?

Much smaller for now. Industry estimates suggest Amazon Now handles a fraction of Blinkit's daily orders, though it is expanding quickly and Amazon does not report the numbers separately.

4. Is Instamart's loss improving?

Not in rupee terms. The adjusted EBITDA loss rose from Rs. 778 crore in Q1 to Rs. 895 crore in Q2, although Swiggy says it believes losses have peaked.

5. Who leads India's quick-commerce market?

Blinkit leads, with estimates placing its market share between roughly 44 and 50 percent, ahead of Instamart and Zepto.

6. Does the Zepto IPO matter for Eternal and Swiggy shares?

It could. A listed Zepto would give investors another direct comparison on losses and valuation, which may influence how Instamart is valued.
