Why do NSE's option chain and your broker's app sometimes show slightly different numbers? Here is what actually differs between the two, and which to trust.
Pull up Nifty's option chain on the NSE website, then open the same expiry on your broker's app, and you will occasionally spot small differences. Open interest at a strike might be off by a few thousand contracts. Implied volatility might read slightly differently. It is a fair question to ask why two supposedly identical data sets do not always agree down to the decimal.
The short answer is that they are not entirely the same product, even though they both ultimately trace back to the same option chain structure NSE generates.
NSE publishes the official, live option chain directly on its own website, for every underlying it lists derivatives on, including Nifty and Bank Nifty. This is the raw exchange-level feed, the actual source of truth for open interest, traded volume, and settlement data. Every broker's option chain, no matter how polished it looks, is ultimately built on top of data that originates here.
NSE's own chain is deliberately plain. It shows open interest, change in OI, volume, implied volatility, last traded price, and bid-ask quotes, but it does not calculate or display option Greeks like Delta or Gamma directly. It is a reference tool, not a trading dashboard.
Your broker's app takes that same underlying exchange data and layers several things on top of it. Small mismatches usually come down to timing, not error. NSE's own page and your broker's app each take a snapshot of the data at slightly different moments, and in a market moving as fast as Nifty's during active hours, even a two or three second gap can show a slightly different OI or LTP figure. Brokers offering genuinely real-time data typically license a direct feed from the exchange, while some lower-tier or free data plans may run on a short delay, which widens this gap further.

For final, official open interest figures, especially anything tied to settlement or a genuine discrepancy dispute, NSE's own chain is the authoritative source, since every contract ultimately clears through the exchange itself. For day-to-day trading decisions, a broker's chain is usually the more practical tool, since the added Greeks, buildup tags, and sentiment metrics save real time when you are trying to move quickly, such as when building a trade using option chain analysis or reading Bank Nifty's option chain for an intraday setup.
Where this distinction genuinely matters is strike selection. Choosing between an ITM or OTM option or working out which strike price actually fits your view depends on Greeks and IV data that only your broker's chain conveniently displays, even though the underlying OI and price figures both platforms show ultimately trace back to the same NSE data.
If you notice an unusually large OI spike or a sudden IV jump on your broker's chain that looks odd, cross-checking it against NSE's own live chain takes less than a minute and confirms whether you are looking at genuine market activity or a display lag on your broker's end.
